INSTALLATION NOTES These are installation instructions for AnyView Professional. AnyView Professional may be installed over previous versions of itself. *************************************************************** *************************************************************** 1a. System Requirements *************************************************************** Before you install AnyView Professional, please confirm that your system is equipped with the following hardware and software: * An 80386 or better microprocessor (CPU), four megabytes or more of RAM (eight megabytes or more is recommended), and approximately two megabytes of hard disk space * MS-DOS or PC-DOS version 3.1 or later, Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11, Enhanced Mode * You should have all of your Windows display drivers for all the resolutions and color depths that your video controller supports installed on your system before installing AnyView Professional. Also, the install may go more smoothly if you run Windows with your 256 color drivers when installing AnyView Professional. *************************************************************** 1b. Installation On a Single-User System *************************************************************** First, check AnyView Professional's requirements on the preceding page to ensure that your system has the appropriate resources to run this software. Next, start Windows as usual and proceed as follows: Starting the Installation 1. Place the AnyView Professional diskette in the appropriate diskette drive (A or B). 2. Open the File menu in the Windows Program Manager or File Manager and select Run. 3. Type [drive]:SETUP.EXE, where [drive] is the letter of the drive where you placed the AnyView Professional diskette, and press [Enter]. After Setup initializes your system, a screen appears with four options: Quick Installation, Custom Installation, View README.TXT and Exit. Choosing Quick Installation will completely setup your system with a minimum of effort. You can press Custom Installation to choose which features and options to install. View README.TXT opens the README.TXT file in the Notepad application. Exit terminates the program. *************************************************************** 1c. Quick Installation *************************************************************** Sit back and relax! Choosing Quick Installation automatically creates a directory on the same drive as your Windows directory, copies all of the AnyView Professional program files, creates an icon group and deletes any older versions of AnyView Professional that might be found. Press Restart Windows when prompted and AnyView Professional will be up and running. Though Quick Installation recognizes most drivers using its intuitive method of installation, there is a chance you may be prompted to enter an OEMSETUP.INF disk. In this case, see the section later in this chapter entitled "Installation Using a Microsoft Compliant OEMSETUP Diskette." After completing the Quick Installation, you may skip ahead to the chapter entitled, "Getting to Know AnyView Professional." Note: If you receive an advisory message from the Setup application regarding drivers that are not installed on your system, simply install them from their floppy disk or directory using your video controller's installation program. After Windows reloads, double click the AnyView Professional icon in our program group to restart Windows with the AnyView Professional driver. *************************************************************** 1d. Custom Installation *************************************************************** 1. After pressing Custom Installation, the Setup application displays the directory into which it plans to install AnyView Professional. The default directory is AVPRO on the drive which contains the Windows directory. To accept the default directory, select Continue. To select a different drive or directory, type it in and then select Continue. 2. The Custom Window appears and you are asked to select which features and options should be enabled or disabled. These aren't permanent changes -- all can be changed from within the AnyView Professional application. Features: Though all of AnyView Professional's features are installed when you run the Setup application, you can choose to disable any of them should you desire to do so. These features include Catalyst, Color WYZARD, DPI WYZARD, Green Screen, OptiMemm, and True Switch Color Depth/Resolution Switching. All of these features are enabled by default. Start Up Options: By default, the Setup application creates an AnyView Professional group for your Program Manager and puts an AnyView Professional icon into the Startup group. Either of these options may be disabled. Monitor Selection: Choose the monitor selection which most reflects your own. For information regarding interlaced and non-interlaced monitors, consult your monitor's documentation. Driver Installation: There may be times when you may to choose to install AnyView Professional without using the Setup Application's intuitive method of locating and installing video drivers. For instance, you may have received new drivers from your video controller manufacturer and you would like to install them using a Microsoft Compliant OEM setup diskette. The Setup Application's intuitive method of driver installation is chosen by default. Mouse Interface Call: By default, you can bring the AnyView Professional Toolbar directly to your mouse by double clicking on your right mouse button. Because there are other applications which may use this same setting, the Setup application gives you the choice of either setting the middle mouse button as the interface call or of having none set at all. Interface: AnyView Professional's features can be accessed through either the Toolbar or the Control Panel. Though the Toolbar is smaller and less obtrusive than its counterpart, the Control Panel is more detailed and helps you to monitor your system. "Always Topmost" indicates that you want the interface to always be visible no matter what application you may be using. By default, the Toolbar is the chosen interface and is always topmost. Video Memory: This setting allows you to choose the amount of video memory that is installed on your video controller. One megabyte of memory is chosen as default. After making your setting choices, select Continue. 3. If you have previously installed AnyView, Screen Commander for Windows, the Setup application asks whether you'd like to have it removed from your system. We recommend that you allow the Setup application to make it so. 4. Restart Windows as prompted and AnyView Professional is ready for use. *************************************************************** 1e. Network Client Station Installation *************************************************************** It's possible to install AnyView Professional on most client stations on Windows compliant networks. There are no special steps, even with networked versions of Windows. *************************************************************** 1f. Installation Using Microsoft Compliant OEM Setup Diskettes *************************************************************** There are times when AnyView Professional cannot install intuitively because it does not have enough information regarding your video controller and video drivers. When this situation occurs, the installation program will bring up a dialog screen entitled "Installation with a Microsoft Compliant OEMSETUP Diskette." At this time, please insert the diskette which was shipped with your video controller and indicate the OEMSETUP.INF file using the directory tree on the right side of the window. You can also point to an OEMSETUP.INF file that has already been installed onto your hard disk if you like -- however, this would be a directory other than the System directory. An OEMSETUP.INF file in your System directory may describe a different piece of hardware and installation would not be able to continue. Note: If you reach this window but do not have a Microsoft compliant OEMSETUP diskette, go ahead and click the Cancel button. Without access to the OEMSETUP.INF file, the TrueSwitch color depth and resolution changing features cannot be activated; however, all of AnyView Professional's other features can still be installed. If you would like to continue, choose Custom install and then uncheck the resolution and color depth switching checkboxes. Continue installation as discussed earlier in this section. You may then contact our technical support department for information on how to properly install for your video controller. Please see the "Troubleshooting" section in Appendix A for more information. After you have pointed to the proper OEMSETUP.INF file, a dialog box will appear for your display driver set up. For the next few minutes, you will confirm the OEM supplied drivers for the specific resolutions and color depths available for your video controller. The installation program will list the resolution for which it needs a driver. Below, in a list box, the installation program will highlight the driver it believes matches that resolution. If the suggestion is correct, simply choose Select. If the choice is not correct, highlight the correct driver and choose Select. If the installation program cannot locate the driver to match the resolution, the Skip button is highlighted. Because there are few video controllers that are capable of running every resolution in every color depths, it is likely you will need to skip some resolutions. If you make a mistake at any time, you can choose Start Over to make new choices. *************************************************************** 2. Technical notes on Color Depth Switching and Global Memory *************************************************************** When running image editing software, it is recommended that you switch to your desired color depth before running the application. Editing a bitmap and then switching color depths may degrade the quality of the bitmap. Saving the bitmap file at that time will save the degraded version of the bitmap. Some monochrome bitmaps (dragging an icon, for instance) won't display in color modes above 256 color mode. This is done intentionally to prevent a bug that is in many display drivers that occurs when running with AnyView Professional. Your display drivers may not have this bug, and you can determine this by adding the following line to the [AnyViewPro] section of the AVPRO.INI file located in the AVPRO directory: DIB8to1on=on When color switching is enabled, Windows will only boot up initially in 256 color mode. AnyView Professional can be configured to automatically switch you to the color mode that you were in when you exited Windows. To do this, add the following line to the [AnyViewPro] section of the AVPRO.INI file located in the AVPRO directory: BootRestoreColor=on If the system or applications you are running are displaying large bitmaps or a large number of bitmaps, a color switch may delay for a long time. This is because AnyView Professional needs to convert all of the bitmaps to the new color mode. When color switching is enabled, bitmaps that the system or applications display require more memory than with color switching disabled. It is recommended that you do not configure your desktop to display a large bitmap as your background wallpaper. (From Windows Control Panel's Desktop configuration) It is also recommended that you do not open multiple large bitmap files simultaneously, particularly when you are in a high color (32K,64K,16M) mode. If you experience memory problems, try increasing your Windows swap file size to 4 or 8 megabytes. Global Memory: With the Color Switch feature enabled, the amount of global memory available to Windows will decrease. OptiMemm cannot help with this issue, as it increases the amount of Windows Resource memory available, thus allowing you to run more applications, but not the amount of global memory available. An example of a need for a large amount of global memory is opening a very large bitmap in a high color mode, or opening multiple bitmap files simultaneously. *************************************************************** 3. Technical Support for the Evaluation copy of AnyView Professional *************************************************************** TECHNICAL SUPPORT: Binar Graphics, Inc. will be happy to provide you with technical support for your evaluation copy of SkyScraper. We will be providing this support directly through the following mediums: CompuServe at "73232,342" - AOL at "BG Tech" and the Internet at "Binar@crl.com" You will not be able to attain technical support from Binar Graphics, Inc. by telephone unless you have a serial number. Once you have purchased a fully licensed version of SkyScraper, our representatives will be happy to help you via telephone as well. *************************************************************** 4. Changing Video Controllers and Reinstalling AnyView Professional *************************************************************** We recommend that you reset Windows to the Microsoft VGA driver before changing your video controller. You can do this by running SETUP from the Windows directory while at the DOS level. Please see your Windows manual for more information. After inserting your new video controller, install the video controller's drivers using the manufacturer's instructions. When you have restarted Windows, run SETUP from your AnyView Professional distribution diskette and follow the installation instructions listed earlier in this section. *************************************************************** 5. Uninstalling AnyView Professional *************************************************************** Getting Back into Windows if the installation process has failed at the DOS level: If you install AnyView Professional and find that Windows will not restart after the initial reboot, SETUP has failed to configure your system correctly. In order to fix this problem and get you back into Windows, we have included a DOS level uninstaller. The DOS uninstall is located in the directory that is assigned to AnyView Professional during installation (the default installation directory is "AVPRO"). From within AnyView Professional's directory, type "AVUNINST" at the DOS prompt. This command will reset Windows to the original display driver, but it will not delete the AnyView Professional files/components. After returning to Windows you can perform a complete uninstall of AnyView Professional by using the uninstall icon located in the AnyView Professional Program Group. Uninstalling from within Windows: Should you decide for one reason or another to uninstall AnyView Professional, the provided Uninstall program will do the job quickly and efficiently. Use the AnyView Uninstall icon in the AnyView Professional program group. 1. Click on the Uninstall icon in your AnyView Professional group or run the AVUNINST.EXE file in your AnyView Pro directory from the File Manager or Program Manager. 2. After Uninstall deletes AnyView Professional's icons from the Program Manager, a dialog box will ask you to restart Windows. Uninstall will be complete after you restart.
